Cyberscape is a racing board game with a twist: the board itself spins, and every rotation changes the optimal route to the finish line. We developed it over four months as a university project in my first semester. The heaviest inspiration was Mario Kart and its fast-paced excitement.
I designed the spinning board mechanic and the strategic layer it adds, which kept players excited throughout the game. Our goal was to capture the dynamic, adrenaline-fueled experience of digital racing in board game form, and to end up with a racing game that players remember.
The three rotating rings went through many iterations before they worked. Earlier versions kept missing the feeling we were chasing; this layout finally matched our Mario Kart intent, with rings that constantly shift the best way into the finish line. Fine-tuning the mechanic was hard and took a lot of focus group testing and simulation, but the result was worth it. Players loved the thrill of Cyberscape and felt it captured the racing feel of a digital Mario Kart on the tabletop.
